BAYLISS, William John aka William John BROWN (name on enlistment) aka Yank BROWN No. 2452 5th Contingent, Company 13. He enlisted and was discharged in New Zealand. His Parents were William John BAYLISS and Alice NEALE of Bathurst, NSW.

AHRENFELD, Reuben/Rueben b.  1892 Birth Reg. Ashfield. N.S.W.  No. 2558 Pte. 11th Australian Railway Corps.   He left Australia ?? /9/1914 and returned
13/??/1919.  His parents were Norman McKinnon AHRENFELD and Laura J. Kelly and his father was from Victoria.   His wife was Florence Gwendoline BROADHURST. 

BRAIN, Bert, b. 1896 d. 18 September 1916 of wounds in Ontario Military Hospital  in England.  No. 3465 Sapper 4th Field Co. Engineers. Memorial Panel 32 Kent 98 Ontario Cemetery, Orpington Churchyard,  England.  He enlisted on 4 August 1915.  His parents were John Thomas BRAIN and Emma (nee STONE) from Ulverstone, Tasmania.

BRAIN, Clarence Ernest  M.M. b. 1894 (Dec’d). No. 1954 Cpl. 10th F.A. Brigade.  He enlisted on 26 August 1914 and returned to Australia on 5 January 1918.  His parents were Ernest Goode BRAIN and Adelaide Albina (nee WRIGHT) from Tasmania.   His M.M. was not shown on the Family History. 

CLARKE, Clive Gordon, b. 26th January, 1894 Cpl. No. 109 First Division Signals. Killed in Action, 8 November 1917.  Memorial Panel 25 Belgium 15 Reninghelst, New Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. 1 V.B.  He was the son of Alfred Edward CLARKE and Margaret Helen nee GOWAN). 

CLARKE, at (Grevilleer's British Cemetery) Edward Vincent (Timo) b. 1892, d. 1959 Box Hill, Victoria.  Gnr. No. 35102 8th F.A. Brigade.  He enlisted on 18 May 1917 and returned to Australia on 24 December, 1918.  He was the son of Alfred Edward CLARKE and Margaret Helen GOWAN.  

CLARKE, at (Grevilleer's British Cemetery) Hercules Lionel b. 1886 d. 4 May 1917 (of wounds at Bullecourt).  No. 1582 Pte. 19th Inf. Btn.  He enlisted on 8 August 1916.  Memorial Panel 88 France 512 Grevillers British Cemetery.  He was the son of Bonus CLARKE and Mary Isobel (nee EAST) from Bondi, N.S.W.  Julius and Reginald below were his brothers. 

CLARKE, Julius Ordo b. 1895 d. 3 May 1917 (Killed in Action) No. 1593A 19th Inf. Btn.  He enlisted on 8 August 1916.  Memorial Panel 88, 26 Villers Bretonneaux – France.

CLARKE, William Reginald Quintus. born 1893  Pte. No. 5993, 2nd Battalion AIF (on enlistment on 1st March 1916 as I was informed) and was in the 54th Bat when he returned to Australian 21 September 1919.  He is the brother of Hercules and Julius CLARKE, who were killed at Bulllecourt.  It was reported that he served as a Torpedo Technical Assistant for the RAN in WW2 bur I have no other details.  His parents were Bonus CLARKE and Mary Isobel EAST from Bondi, NSW.  He was a 2nd cousin of the SMYTHE boys.  

CRAWLEY, Albert Cecil. b. 1893, Private No. 7253.  He enlisted on 23 October 1915 and returned to Australia on 13 December 1918.  His parents were Robert CRAWLEY and Rachael Sophia (nee BRAIN) from Tasmania. 

CURRIE, Charles Cloudsley b. 1897 d. age 82.  Pte. 50430 2nd Fld. Squadron.  He enlisted on 25 January 1918 and returned to Australia on 26/7/1919.   He was the son of William John CURRIE and Margaret SHADE and a second cousin to the SMYTHE boys. 

CURRIE, Hubert Roulstone Clifford, b. 1890 d. 7 August 1915 Killed in Action. No. 884 Pte. 8th Light Horse.  Memorial Panel 6, 6 Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

N.B. Members of the family used spellings of the surname – CURRIE.  and  CURRY  

DANDY, Cyril John, b 16 August 1892.   He enlisted or left Aust. on 3 July 1917  No. 3522, 40th Btn. and returned to Australia 8 May 1919.  His parents were John Henry DANDY and Ada Louisa (nee WEBB).

DAVIS, Norman Clement b. 1889 d. 1978.  No. 12550 Driver, A Emp. Co.  He enlisted on 7 April 1916 and returned to Australia on 9 July 1919.  He was the son of Henry DAVIS and Marion (nee DAWSON) and his wife was Adrienne Estelle (nee CLARKE).  

GLASGOW, William Cecil b. 1895 d. 1966 No. 1352 Pte. ? Hqrs A M I/Train (Details not clear on record) on return to Australia.  I believe he was in the Australian Light Horse originally. He enlisted on 1st August 1915 and returned to Australia on the 10th July 1919. His parents were William H. GLASGOW and Rebecca J. ROSS from N.S.W. 

GRAHAM, Alfred Edward b. 1896 d. 1973 No. 3560 Private 49th Btn. (on return).  Initially I was told that he was in the 12th Btn. on enlistment on 11 August 1915.  He returned to Australia on 8 January, 1919.  On his death at Parramatta in NSW, he was shown as being in the 52nd Btn.  His parents were William GRAHAM and Clara (nee SMITH) from Tasmania.  SMITH'S BECAME SMYTHE, not quite so common. He and Ernest were 1st cousins to the SMYTHE boys.  Viv (Edward Vivian SMYTHE) saw both of them, whilst fighting in France.  

GRAHAM, Ernest William b. 1891 d. 1972 No. 3661 Cpl. 51st Btn. (on return). As he enlisted with his brother Alfred, he was probably in the same unit on enlistment on 11 August 1915. He returned to Australia on 5 April 1919.  See other details above.

JOHNSTON, Charles Sykes McIntosh.  Please refer to page one for full details about my grandfather.  His parents were David JOHNSTON and Mary Anne (nee McINTOSH). He was from Moss Vale, N.S.W.

McINTOSH, Alexander Charles b. 1878, No. 156 Sgt. 60th Railway Co. He enlisted on 21 December 1916 and returned to Australia on 2 March 1919.  His parents were Charles McINTOSH and Margaret (nee GRANT).  He was listed as Charles Alexander on the Nominal Roll.  He was my father’s uncle.

McINTOSH, William Charles b. 1894 No. 30534 Driver 7th F.A. Brigade.  He enlisted on 3 August 1916 and returned to Australia on 22 September 1919.   His parents were Neil McINTOSH and Anne (nee DOLMAN).   He was my grandfather’s cousin.  He was listed under Charles William MacINTOSH on the Nominal Roll. 

0RCHARD, (at Dikkibus Cemetery) Albert Arthur (Lieut.) 10 FAB was awarded the Military Cross & Bar in WW1. ( From records it appears that  he and Arthur William were brothers, both sharing the name of Arthur.  For details of his parents see Arthur below. 

ORCHARD, Arthur William, M.M, b. 6 May 1896 d. 15 July 1917 of wounds.  No. 2493 Bombardier, 10 Brigade A.F.A.  His M.M. was not shown in the family history.  He was Albert’s brother.   Memorial Panel 16, Belgium 29 Dikkibus New Military Cemetery Extension. His parents were Arthur William Henry ORCHARD and Mary Anne Eliza (nee CAREY).   Her mother was Elizabeth JESSOP, who was the daughter of James JESSOP and Elizabeth LEE.  I have not worked out the relationship to my family but it is distant.  The family came from Launceston, Tasmania. 

PEPPIATT, William James, b.1895 d. 13 September 1964.  No. 6955 Pte. 12th Btn.  He enlisted on  27 September 1916 and returned to Australia on 4 July, 1919.  His parents were William PEPPIATT and Christine (nee EDMOND) from Tasmania.

ROADKNIGHT, James James (Lieutenant) b. 11.7.1892 Swanreech, Vic. and died 12.10.17.  He enlisted at Bairnsdale No. 858 (age shown as 28) 0n 18th or 19th August 1914 and he was in the 8th Inf. Btn but on death was in the 37th.  Embarked 19.10.14. His parents were James ROADKNIGHT and Annie Maria (nee Smith) f Bairnsdale.  He was buried 29 The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Belgium.  Memorial Panel 129.  

ROADKNIGHT, Walter (Lieutenant) b. 13.12.1885 Swan, Vic. and died of wounds 11.08.18.  He enlisted on 10.01.16 No. 803 and was in the 37 Btn.  when he died.   His parents were James ROADKNIGHT and Annie Maria (nee SMITH) of Bairnsdale. He was buried France 119 Daours Communal Cemetery Extension. Memorial Panel 129.  

SMYTHE, Herbert Andrew, Killed in Action 3 May 1917.  Memorial Panel 38, 26 Villiers Bretoneaux – France.  For other details see Page 1.  He was the eldest brother of the three named below.  His brother Viv (Edward Vivian) wrote the following information giving the actual place of the death on map.  France Sheet 51B SW. 1/20,000. WEBB, William Henry, b. 21 April, 1897.  the record shows that he enlisted in Launceston, 3 October 1916 and died December 1917.  Memorial Panel 133, Belgium 333 Berks Cemetery Extension (Rosenburg Plots), Ploesteert..  His parents were Charles Albert WEBB and Fannie.
