Anzac Day as school child we played the Last Post, recited the 'Ode',

The ANZAC Dedication:
For the Fallen
by Laurence Binyon

They shall not grow old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning,
We will remember them.
We will remember them.

A two minute silence and we wore Rosemary.  Our lapels we also place sprigs of Rosemary. The Virgin Mary was said to be resting and laid her cloak over a flowering white Rosemary Bush and turned blue when the cloak was removed and hence the Rose of Mary became a Rosemary bush. Rosemary oil is aid to be used to enhance our memories.

Remembrance Day 11th November, we all wear a sprig of Rosemary with a Poppy as well. Wonderful  presentations were given by an 'Old Digger' well I was young.. they would come and tell us some stories of their war experiences. We sat there is awe of the bravery. It really was so hard to understand what they really endured. As we know far too many did not return to tell us their story.

Anzac Day is held on the 25th April to commemorate the first time a major theatre of war was when our brave men landed on the shores of Gallipoli. They were accompanied with the New Zealanders and so the word Anzac came into our vocabulary. Outdated maps, misinformation and intelligence from the British lead us into  the worst battles causalities that Australians an New Zealanders  had ever experienced. This 'Bloody Battle' lasted eight months. The casualties during these battles  were 8, 587 with some 19, 367 wounded. Australian were at war helping their allies, British, French Russians, Japan, Italy and later in 1917 USA. The enemy was the Germans and the Turks who were taught to be going to invade Russia. All our men were volunteers.

During this exercise we were to be landing on the shores with 20,00 men and hold onto the Turkish coast at the Dardanelle's and then take Istanbul. However they landed on the wrong beach facing steep cliffs and an Army of strong defensive Turks with a well organised   army defending their country with all their might. Thousands of our wonderful brave very young men died in this outrageous military battle fought on the WRONG BEACH. When they retreated from their enormous losses in  January they went to Egypt and the great Western Front.

Services begin around the country at dawn as this is when the landing took place at the wrong Cove. The first march took place in London in 1916. The first dawn service was held in 1923.

Over There
Famous Sing Along Patriotic MIDI Song
Lyrics and Music by George M. Cohan (1917) This song although American was sung by all folk during the war. The USA came into the war 6th April,1917, three years after this war began. President Woodrow Wilson announced to Congress on the 2nd April 1917 and four days later Congress overwhelming declared that USA had entered  the Great War.

Johnnie, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run,
Hear them calling you and me, ev'ry son of liberty
Hurry right away, no delay, go today
Make your Daddy glad to have had such a lad,
Tell your sweetheart not to pine, to be proud her boy's in line.

Over there, over there!
Send the word, send the word, over there!
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming,
The drums rum-tumming ev'rywhere!
So prepare, say a prayer, send the word, send the word to beware!
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't come back 'til it's over Over There!

Johnnie, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,
Johnnie show the Hun you're a son of a gun!
Hoist the flag and let her fly,
Yankee Doodle do or die
Pack your little kit, show your grit, do your bit.

Yankees to the ranks from the towns and the tanks
Make your mother proud of you and the old Red White and Blue.

Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word, over there!
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming,
The drums rum-tumming ev'ry where
So prepare, say a prayer, send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't be back, 'til it's Over There.

LOOK GOD

I have never spoken to You,
But now I want to say, how do you do
You see God, they told me you did not exist
And, like a fool, I believed all of this.
Last night from a shell hole
I saw you & I figured right then
They had told me a lie.
Had I taken the time to see
The things you made,
I would know they weren't calling
A spade a spade.
I wonder, God, if you would shake my hand
Somehow, I feel that you will understand.
Strange, I had to come to this hellish place
Before I had time to see your face.
Well, I guess there isn't much more to say,
But I am sure glad, God, I met you today.
I guess the zero hour will soon be here,
But I am not afraid since I know you are near.
The signal - well, God, I will have to go
I love you lots, this I want you to know.
Looks like this will be a horrible fight
Who knows, I may come to your house tonight.
Though I wasn't friendly with you before, I wonder, God,
If you would wait at the door.
Look, I am crying, me - shedding tears
I wish I had known you these many years.
Well, I will have to go now, God.
Goodbye.
Strange, since I met  you, I am not afraid to die.
